When it comes to hiring a new employee, I spend less than 2 minutes looking at the potential candidates’ resumes.

Create resume that can get you the job you want

I have had 4 years of management skills under my belt ranging from Pharmacy in Charge at a retail pharmacy to currently a Pharmacy Director at a community hospital. During my leadership experience, I have hired quite a few pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. In this blog, I want to share some tips that actually landed me the job that I wanted. The best part is you can apply these tips to improve your resume right away.

Clear Format

You want your resume to be organized, relatable, and easy to read

Example of the resume header

The top is your name and contact information such as phone number, address, and email. Your personal email needs to look professional as well. I would not take you seriously if your email address is tripplethreatxxx@gmail.com or smartchicken@yahoo.com.

Next, you want to list your accomplishment and related skills that you have collected over the years. For example, in a resume for an Information Technology position, candidates’ achievements can be: 5 years experiences as Lead Software Engineer, oversee security system at AAA corporation, manage BBB project… Related skills can be the programs that candidate knows: Java, C++, Python,…

Besides, when crafting previous work experience, you want to use the same format that interviewer can follow. The easiest arrangement is:

  • Location
  • Tittle
  • Duration
  • Job descriptions

Example of Job description format

You can use straight line also to separate different paragraphs

Straight line made your resume easy on the eyes

Make It Short and Condense

No one wants to read a lengthy resume unless you have been in the field for 40 years and have an impressive list of qualified experiences. I recommend using bullets points to list out your tasks or job descriptions.

Bullets points are your best friends

List Your Accomplishments At The Top

When creating a resume, it is essential to let employers know what you have accomplished over your career. By doing that, you save employers time especially if they have hundreds of applications.

For example, take a look at my resume:

Example of accomplishments

This resume I created when I looked for a pharmacy director position. I list the years I have been the pharmacist and different visits from various accredited organizations I experienced when I was in the director position. This is beneficial because an employer who hire pharmacy directors always want to know if I have been through these visits. The second important thing is the computer system that I know. When starting a new job at a new hospital, knowing the system well is an advantage because it will make my transition smoother and I can learn faster.

Only List Relevant Experience To The Job You Are Apply For

This is one of the common mistake people often make when creating a resume. Adding irrelevant experience to your resume, especially for a highly professional position, will make it look like you don’t know what you are doing. Employers don’t want to spend an extra few minutes looking at that, and it definitely decreases your chances. It might not be a big deal, but when it comes down to it, it can be an elimination factor.

  • Applying for Computer Engineering: no need to list the pizza delivery job when you did in college
  • Applying for Journalist: no need to put down that you were a substitute teacher after college.

Look At The Job Listing To See What The Requirements Are

If you don’t know what to put in your resume to make it look like you know what you are doing or understand what the future job expectations are, here are the tip: look at other jobs listing and copy relevant information to your resume.

Example of how to look for job descriptions

Above is a job listing for Information Technology in the Navy. As you can see, they listed the responsibilities of the position. If you have been in the field of Information technology before and you want to get other IT gigs in the navy, I would include these responsibilities in your resume.
